This house can comfortably pay for itself.
Two years ago we moved to North Carolina, but kept the home and put it on AirBnB and VRBO.
We’d be happy to provide the full P&L statement for the last few years. In 2024 so far the house has earned $221.6k after all platform fees.
Other details:
The business has been run almost entirely by our friends here on the coast, in fact we now live in the UK and it’s continued to run smoothly despite us being 8 time zones away. They’re available to continue if you’d like them to. We have a very reliable cleaner, property manager, handyman and gardener.
When we lived in the home, we would still put the house on AirBnB for one weekend each month, which easily paid for whatever we wanted to do with the family.
Because we cater to the luxury market (Ritz Carlton is 7 minutes away and many groups are attending weddings there), it has forced us to maintain the house to a high standard, and the clientele are consistently respectful. Our cleaner and the guests alert us to any issues they discover, and we’ve worked hard to get good reviews and respond, forcing a much greater attention to maintenance than most homes probably receive.
There is a studio with its own entrance on the bottom floor. We ran this as its own AirBnB as well for a while, and lived in the rest of the house.
Short term rentals in San Mateo County are limited to 180 days per year. Because of the luxury nature of our home, we haven’t found that a major concern as it books primarily on weekends.
